Battlestate Games has electrified the Escape from Tarkov community with the announcement of a revolutionary hardcore wipe for July 2025. What was expected to be an ordinary wipe turns out to be arguably the hardest version of a wipe in the history of the tactical extraction shooter.

Developer announcement: Phased unlock confirmed

Lead developer Nikita Buyanov has confirmed in a significant statement on Twitter that the hardcore mechanics will be unlocked in phases. Various adjustments to the trading system and other customizations will be implemented in waves as players progress. This adaptive approach should ensure that even seasoned veterans are continually challenged.

However, it remains unclear exactly what these phases will look like. Buyanov explained that the three images already released only show part of the planned changes. The exact dates and conditions for unlocking the various hardcore elements have not yet been communicated, which is causing speculation in the community.

No more flea market

The centerpiece of the hardcore wipe is the complete deactivation of the flea market for the entire duration of the wipe. This drastic change means the end of convenient item procurement via player-to-player trading. Every item must be laboriously found in raids or bartered with NPCs.

Hideout revolution: more items, fewer restrictions

The Hideout system is undergoing a fundamental overhaul. While more items will be required for upgrades in future, the found-in-raid restriction will be removed completely. This paradoxical change could redefine the gameplay balance: Teams can give each other hideout items without having to find them in a raid. At the same time, ammunition production in the Hideout will be drastically limited, making high-end ammunition such as M61 much rarer.

Map access becomes a question of survival

One of the most controversial new features concerns restricted map access. Most locations are now only accessible via transitions from other maps. This change could completely change the meta, as popular spawn camping spots could be created at transition points. The community already fears overcrowded transition zones and unfair spawn situations.

Secure Container: From safety net to keychain

The Secure Container, traditionally the last line of defense for valuable items, is being drastically curtailed. Ammunition, currency and certain medicine can no longer be safely stowed away. This change forces players to be extremely careful in gameplay, as any death means the loss of all valuable items.

Bosses everywhere: 100% spawn guarantee

As if the Hardcore Wipe wasn’t already brutal enough, Battlestate Games guarantees a 100% boss spawn rate on all maps. At the same time, the AI difficulty is increased, while the experience points for kills are reduced. Only survival will be rewarded – a clear statement for survival over action.

Dealer apocalypse

The dealer system is also being revolutionized. The selection of available items will be drastically reduced, while selling prices will fall and buying prices will rise. This economic change forces players to spend wisely and makes every ruble count.

Community split: hardcore vs. casual

Reactions in the community are divided. Hardcore fans celebrate the return to Tarkov’s survival roots, while casual players fear that the game will become inaccessible. There is particular criticism that the hardcore wipe may not be optional, but will affect all players.

Technical challenges

Parallel to the hardcore wipe, players will have to clean up their inventories. Battlestate Games warns of a bug with stacked items (more than seven levels deep), which can lead to the permanent loss of items. The developers promise compensation, but the community is skeptical.

The last wipe before 1.0?

The hardcore wipe for July 2025 could be the final wipe before the 1.0 release, which is planned for Q4 2025. Patch 0.16.8.0 will also bring new prestige levels and extended PMC customization options. A final update in August will then pave the way for the full version.

The phased Hardcore Wipe system marks a turning point in Tarkov’s development – an adaptive, progressive challenge that continually redefines the game and pushes even the most experienced PMCs to their limits.
